The USA is losing the race of all the countries in food waste. Not necessarily the most food wasted, but the percentage. The USA actually wasted enough food to fill the Empire State 91 times in 2010! Food in the USA is the second most popular landfill component. When the leftover food is left in landfills, it will make methane (A greenhouse gas that is 21 times more powerful then CO2), which will make the atmosphere even worse than it is now. And now you know how much composting impacts all of us.
European Countries Food Waste
About one hundred million tons of food is wasted in Europe. If this food waste doesn't stop, in 2020, the EU's food waste will rise to 120 million tons of food waste, instead of what we waste on average, every year: 100 million tons. One of the EU's goals is to "Protect human and animal health." They say they won't be able to 100% stop food waste, but they will try to prevent food waste as much as they can.
China Food Waste
China wastes 32 billion U.S. dollars of food, while 128 million of the residents of China live below the poverty line. Some say that China is a model in the global community for struggling with food waste. You also can't really help it when they have a population of 1,357,000,000 people. A lot of people say that population is a bigger problem than food waste. The more people, the more food waste, the more hunger, the more below the poverty line.
