Root Causes
There are many problems leading to food waste, but there are some problems that make the largest impact. Although there are many root causes for food waste, we have identified a root cause on the local, national, and global level.
The local root cause that we chose is that grocery stores have a demand for perfect food- anything lower gets discarded because it doesn’t meet the standards. The national root cause is that governments set standards on how food looks, so it can be eaten or not eaten. Finally, the global root cause, is the unequal distribution of food. This leaves people in lower income countries with less food and people in upper income countries with more food, leading to waste on their part. Therefore, people with more food are more likely to waste it. |
